Unisource Energy Services has awarded grants to assist at risk youth and families in Yavapai County. Officials note the awards have been distributed over the past 3 months through the Grants that make a Difference Program, which offers financial support to non-profit groups that help improve the lives of others. Grant recipients were selected by a group of employee volunteers who looked for programs with measurable and reasonable expectations, offered by organizations that have demonstrated the financial and organizational stability to sustain their efforts. In Yavapai County, the Arizona Children’s Association’s Independent Living Program will receive 25 hundred dollars, the Chino Valley Food Bank’s Feed the Hungry Program will receive $1500, the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter’s Family and Children’s Relief Fund and the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance will each get $1000 and Open Inn’s Turning Point Youth Shelter will receive $4000.

Whooping cough has been discovered at a Cottonwood Middle School. according to Yavapai County Epidemiologist Steven Everett, there have been cases of suspected whooping cough in the Verde Valley throughout the fall, but this is the first instance where a lab has been able to isolate the germ that causes the disease. Everett says this bacteria-caused disease can be very dangerous to young children and potentially deadly for infants:

An alleged Cottonwood home invasion suspect has been apprehended. Last week Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reported suspicious activity in the 13 hundred block of Chuckwalla Drive in Cottonwood. upon arrival, deputies located an unoccupied truck with the passenger window smashed out. They also found several vehicles on La Jolla Way that had been burglarized. Deputies met with 28 year old Aaron Stevens, who called to report his truck stolen.

Based on evidence recovered from the crime scenes and a suspect description, Stevens was arrested for robbery, several counts of burglary, theft, aggravated assault and prohibited possessor. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn explains Stevens’ girlfriend, 27 year old Amy Saucedo has also been arrested after she wouldn’t give up her cell phone:
